The word ‘Career’ means progress through life, development and progress of a person, party, principle, etc. In the context of guidance ‘Career ‘means lifelong process of Development of an individual beginning with his education in and out of school to the culmination of his achievements in various spheres of life based on his life roles, values and goals.
It is too simplistic to consider Career Guidance as mere provision of educational and occupational information. In fact, Career Guidance given to student’s aims at helping them know their talents and potentials, needs and aspirations, and their current and future
Life goals. The following are the general objectives set for a Career Guidance:-
- To orient students in the field to create career awareness.
- To introduce students to the world of work.
- To enable them to study about local occupations.
- To facilitate them to make realistic occupational choices.
- To set them in right directions to persue their choice occupations.
- To monitor the progress of students to ascertain whether it is in tune with their career options.
- To initiate remedial measures, if students fail to progress in their set paths.
Specific objectives of Career Guidance from class IX-XII are as under:-
CLASS-IX-X:-
- To explain the need and importance of educational and occupational planning under the light of their need to select Science/Art/Commerce streams.
- To facilitate the students to draw up an educational and occupational plan.
- To introduce topics such as ‘Study Habits’, ‘Time Management’, ‘Reality Testing etc.
- To involve them in Career Conferences and Career Exhibitions.
- To arrange ‘meet the professionals’ programmes to enable them interact with the professionals of various fields in the schools as well as in their work places.
CLASS XI-XII :-
- To introduce them to topics such as ‘Employment market and latest trends’, ‘Human resource needs for some professions’, ‘Preparing for competitive exams’ etc.,
- To help them to write monographs on their specific Career plans.
- To explain the various methods of selection for an employment.
- To explain the occupational opportunities available after passing class XII and completing their higher studies.
- To explain the courses of study (educational/training) available after passing class XII for the students of Science/Commerce/Arts streams.
- To introduce the source books available on Educational/Employment opportunities.
